It looks as if I've coerced the database over, and gotten it to play with the install. Now to upgrade from 2.0.21 to 2.0.22, pull the old avatars over, set the avatar permissions... and that should be all.

OK, so here's where I am at. The forum database is too large to use the restore function with, so I'm having to fuss with a trick where I make a seperate install of phpmyadmin and tell it to import from a directory on localhost. Sadly, the instructions I have for this seem to be for an old version of phpmyadmin. Once that's sorted out, we'll see how changing mysql versions between hosts has gone.

phpbb installed without trouble, but session is timing out on backup restore. Must find way around that. Grrr.

DNS propagation has reached me. Work beginning on re-establishing php-mysql functions.

Nameservers changed, there will also be a registrar change in there, hopefully transparent. The main index page will include a footer statement noting it is on the new server if it has propagated to you. Forum and blog will be absent for a while yet.

Status

I'm transferring files at present. I'll need to create a database user mimicking the one the old site mysql stuff was created under, then I'll be ready to throw up the forum. Assuming all goes well I'll keep the forum locked while upgrading to the latest version. The switchover may commence as early as late tonight.
